States Are All Over the Place in Cosmetologists’ Continuing Education

Online Cosmetology Continuing Education If you live in North Carolina, you’ll take 24 hours of hairdresser education this year to keep your stylist’s license. You’ll repeat that routine every year until you’ve been licensed for 20 consecutive years, and then you’re off the continuing education (CE) hook. But if you’re a hairdresser living in Maine, you’ll simply pay your $40 every two years and be good to go.

Nine states require CE credits for cosmetologists, barbers and/or estheticians to keep their licenses: Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas. If you live in one of them, you’re probably in the habit of scheduling some class or online training during the year.

If you live in one of the other 41 states, you still can voluntarily keep yourself up to date. Clients love to hear about the hair show you just attended, the new color/cutting/styling skills and styles you learned online, the trip you made to a hair academy or the class you took with some industry rockstar. Continuing education sets you apart, because it shows how passionate you are about your craft and indicates that you’re up on the latest products and techniques in your profession.

Furthering your education gives you not only something to talk about with clients, but a reason to raise your prices as well. You also can teach coworkers what you learned. Everyone benefits!

What classes would you recommend to other stylists in your state?

I am relocating to another state in the near future and am
thankful it is a simple transaction. I also learn a lot from
reading the monthly magazines, I never miss reading them
cover to cover.

I am in Louisiana where continuing ed is not required, although I strongly believe in it. One of my favorite classes to attend are from Sam Brocatto. His team is well prepared to tackle any obstacle while always delivering fresh and innovative techniques. I am always trying to track them down when they are in town and plan to visit them in New York. Definetly a must for continuing ed.

After living in Florida for four years, where continuing education is a requirement, I believe this is where corporate manufacturers have the opportunity, and perhaps a business responsibility, to really educate their consumer - the licensed cosmetologists, us!
The annual c.e. workshops, presented by those that develop the products that keep us curious, motivated and inspired to do better in what we do for our clients, are also (or I should say were because I'm in California now where we just pay the money for license renewal) a great opportunity for peer. professional networking opportunities - in a learning environment.

Christine, I really hope you don't let your passion for continuing education slip just because California doesn't require it. Every top hairdresser cites education as the number one route to career growth and personal fulfillment. Good luck!
