Count Online Training as One of the Internet’s Blessings
Cyberspace is a nice big stratosphere, large enough to hold as much continuing online education as we can pack in there. Between foreign pleas to open American bank accounts, creepy older guys cyber-stalking teens and fly-by-night companies hawking pills and watches, the Internet holds so much junk that I’m surprised there’s room for anything worthwhile.
Just when I’m ready to scream at still one more “lonely” young lady inviting me to see her pics, I remember what life was like before this easy, 24-hour access to the world came along. People who lived in rural areas, who were disabled or who were simply very busy had few alternatives for researching, shopping and learning. For general fact-finding, you went to a library. For buying, you went to a store or pored through catalogues. And for education, you showed up at class. While there was such a thing as “correspondence school” that had you mailing lessons and homework back and forth, I never knew anyone who actually did that.
So in this season of thanks, I’m grateful for endlessly available and affordable research, shopping and learning. For professionals who are required to gather continuing education credits in order to maintain certification, it makes the Internet much more of a blessing than a curse. Okay, I’m done; we can all get back to seeing what Britney and Paris are up to, haha.
