I think there should be a
hairdressing class called
Sources of Inspiration, and I think the students should teach it. What I love about artists is that you all can look at the same thing I’m looking at but see it completely differently. Let’s take a vase for example. You’ll notice lines and shape, the way the colors play off each other, the texture of the materials; I’ll pretty much throw in some water and flowers and call it a day. I’m all func
-tion and no feng
shui.
I once asked Chicago salon owner Marianna Strokirk what inspired her artistry. Her response lasted a full five minutes. Her inspirational seeds were sown as readily from a simple walk through her city neighborhood as from a tour of Europe. The shades of a bird’s feathers could give her ideas for a hair color formula, a building’s unusual architecture might influence her next hair cut or a friend’s coat could be in her mind’s eye as she delivers a texture service.
Every time you open a magazine, watch TV, walk outside, go shopping, play with a child or even just have a conversation, you’re educating yourself in images and concepts that you can apply to your creative craft. That’s what I love about artists! What inspires you?
