ABS Offered Lots of Hairdresser Education

I had a lot of fun this weekend because I spent much it at America’s Beauty Show in Chicago. Being with thousands of hairdressers was quite entertaining, and watching all the hairstyling education taking place on the floor really made me smile.

The venue was new this year. Instead of holding the show near the airport, the sponsoring association, Cosmetologists Chicago, brought it downtown to McCormick Place so that attendees could shop and dine in the heart of the Midwest’s largest city. I liked the new space. However, I had to wonder whether McCormick Place had ever hosted a big trade show before (obviously, it has). On Saturday, the cab and shuttle bus lines were unforgivable, and anecdotally I heard that people waited two to three hours to get out of there. Although it’s the only convention center near downtown, it’s really 20 blocks south of the Loop and even farther from the Magnificent Mile. In Chicago weather, that’s nowhere near walkable, so you’re dependent on transportation. This aspect wasn’t cool at all.

But the salon education, both on the floor and in the classrooms, looked great—very motivating. I’d love to hear from anyone who attended! There seemed to be a lot of instruction on hair extensions, while skin care training appeared to be more scarce. As usual, the cuts and color demonstrations attracted big crowds. I saw some crimping, too. What did you think?

We did not like McCormick AT all, everyone I talked to did not like the location and said if it is there next year they will not go. And the cabs forget that was a joke. You can't believe how long the line to get a cab out of there was.

I felt it was very unorganized we had a hard time finding the booths we wanted to visit, we went last year in Rosemont and we loved it,shuttles lines were long but moved quickly if you drove FORGET IT.This year I am fortunate to be close eneough(Michigan)to drive again, cabs are to expensive but parking was good we got out with no problem. If its there next year I might consider not going, and whats up with the ticket price?last year it was only $46.

I felt the same way about the McCormick place. I did not like it there at all. It is too far away, and hard to get to if you want to drive it by yourself and are not use to city driving. If it is there next year I am also considering not attending. I never saw so many booths with hair extensions!! I usually like the shopping and there wasnt anything that I was interested in this year.

I did not like it either compared to last year. At Rosemond with the different rooms it was easier to get back to where you wanted to go so you could look at things, compare them and get back to where you wanted to go.

I searched for hours map in hand trying to find booths even with the numbers hanging up it was not easy -- skin care murged into hair etc and there was no clear definition when trying to find anything.

The competitions were interesting but the venting wasn't good at that end of the "hanger" I couldn't stay long because of the build up of product in the air -- and while the windows floor to ceiling were nice to look out of as you were walking to classes it was cold cold cold and I'm talking INSIDE! I had to wear my coat through most classes and while on the "hanger" floor.

Also being one big space the noise from the stages competed with the people and it was one deafening din.

The suppliers were not as happy either as I found many of them just as upset as I was when I finally found them -- they seemed to be innendated with people just searching for free stuff to such a degree they weren't really friendly -- I went because I am opening a salon in the next 6 month and had attended last year and really enjoyed it -- I expected to be able to pretty much get contracts for what I needed but found it was like being in a bargain basement with everyoone fighting over the damaged goods -- and I came home with basically nothing because I wasn't willing to shop like I was on boiler room of a stock market floor!

At least at Rosemond 2/3 or more of the crowd was out of the room you were in at any one time so it was easier to converse with the suppliers.

I might have to try Las Vegas or New York for my next show!
