I had a lot of fun this weekend because I spent much it at America’s Beauty Show in Chicago. Being with thousands of

hairdressers was quite entertaining, and watching all the
hairstyling education taking place on the floor really made me smile.
The venue was new this year. Instead of holding the show near the airport, the sponsoring association, Cosmetologists Chicago, brought it downtown to McCormick Place so that attendees could shop and dine in the heart of the Midwest’s largest city. I liked the new space. How

ever, I had to wonder whether McCormick Place had ever hosted a big trade show before (obviously, it has). On Saturday, the cab and shuttle bus lines were unforgivable, and anecdotally I heard that people waited two to three hours to get out of there. Although it’s the only convention center near downtown, it’s really 20 blocks south of the Loop and even farther from the Magnificent Mile. In Chicago weather, that’s nowhere near walkable, so you’re dependent on transportation. This aspect wasn’t cool at all.
But the
salon education, both on the floor and in the classrooms, looked great—very motivating. I’d love to hear from anyone who attended! There seemed to be a lot of instruction on hair extensions, while skin care training appeared to be more scarce. As usual, the cuts and color demonstrations attracted big crowds. I saw some crimping, too. What did you think?
