Today prom costs a fortune. Just ask parents who are signing the checks or kids who have to double-up the shifts at their part-time jobs. While you can commiserate with the high schoolers who are sitting in your chair these spring weekends, don’t

feel bad that your salon services are among their budgets' line items. For girls, often the best part of going to prom is the look:
the dress, hair, nails and make-up. You know how to do all the cutest
formal hair styles and perhaps the make-up and nails as well. I’d say your cosmetology services are way more critical to this process than the limo, restaurant or boutonniere.
Still, maybe you can be part of the solution.
Create a package that offers hair, nails and make-up at a savings over booking the three salon services separately, or a package that allows three or more girls who come in together to save a little money. Or take a cue from the department store make-up counters and offer a free make-up application with the purchase of the products you’re using or other salon retail items. Still another idea is to offer all prom girls a
coupon for a future service.
By the end of May you’ll probably be ready to say goodbye to prom season until homecoming comes around next fall. Meanwhile, having teens around on the weekends brings a fresh energy to the salon. So enjoy them, but charge a fee that's fair to you.
