I’m all for loyalty and not one to encourage hairdressers to leave their jobs. But sometimes I see people staying put for too long, not just in this business but in all professions. Your first obligation is to your own career, which means that you should be seeking to continually grow and challenge yourself. Stagnation is your enemy whether we’re talking about income or personal

fulfillment.
The salon that provided professional growth for you some years back may not be the same salon that offers you the most challenge now. If you’re still working at your first job, or even if it wasn’t your first salon but you’ve been there a while, just take a minute to look at your progress objectively.
Your reality check should focus on asking yourself two questions: 1) Do I have a clear path to higher earnings that I’ve been following and can further pursue? 2) Am I offered
cosmetology continuing education or at least encouraged to seek advanced salon training on my own?
You can love your coworkers, clients and even team leader. But if you’re standing still, you’ll never get anywhere. The best situation is to work in a salon with the philosophy that every member of the team must be constantly moving forward. When you look around, you should see team members who are thriving, not complaining or just hanging on. Most of all, your business numbers should be on a relatively steady upswing. How about it?
