You can take all the
hair cutting classes in the world, but there’s not much you can do with male clients who are mostly bald. So it’s in your best interest to help the guys keep their hair! A new study conducted by a team of University of London scientists

and published in the
Journal of Investigative Dermatology indicates that baldness may be due to more than genetics, pointing to a pollution component as well. That includes the gunk that sneaks into our hair from our own smoking.
One website quotes the university’s Mike Philpott: “We think any pollutant that can get into the bloodstream or into the skin and into the hair follicle could cause some stress to it and impair the ability of the hair to make a fiber. There are a whole host of carcinogens and toxins in the environment that could trigger this. It suggests that if you stop smoking or live in an area with less air pollution, you may be less predisposed to hair loss.”
If you needed one more reason to encourage clients to stop smoking, here you go! The advice also applies to women since they, too, experience hair loss. As for the pollution, if you live in a heavily polluted area, I guess you don’t want to scare clients into moving. But you can do everything in your own salon environment to keep the air clean and fresh, and then maybe clients will come around more often to get decontaminated!
