I’m interrupting the blog to congratulate this year’s winners of the
North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA), who were

presented their honors this past Sunday at a ceremony in Las Vegas. I’m in awe of what these hair designers can do. And if I may be so immodest, I want to mention that the Hairstylist of the Year, Charlie Price, is one of the
ModernSalonLearning artists whose work is taught in our online classes!
Last week I had the privilege of interviewing both Charlie, owner of Click Salon in Denver, and double winner Maureen Anlauf, a stylist at Juut Salons in Minneapolis. As

you might guess, Charlie and Maureen encourage stylists to challenge themselves by doing photo shoots. It doesn’t have to be for NAHA; you can display the work in ads or as in-salon marketing.
Charlie told me that if staff members don’t jump at the chance to participate in a salon’s shoot, “that’s a red flag because they should think it’s the most fun thing there is to do.” Maureen loves doing photo work so much that she splits her time evenly between shoots and in-salon work. This year’s winner in the
Contemporary Classic and
Fashion Forward categories, Maureen said that when she was named 2006 Hairstylist of the Year, “it was the most joy I’ve ever felt in my life.” Everything begins with education, so if you aspire to anything close to NAHA, take
hair courses and practice, practice, practice. To all the winners and nominees: my sincerest congratulations!
