Children Are the Future—Of Your Hair Clientele, That Is

You know, you’re pretty important. You may be a little girl’s first introduction to professional-level beauty services or a major influence on a boy’s grooming process. Maybe you’ve comforted a frightened toddler or validated an adolescent’s taste. The seeds you plant early when you perform these wee hair cuts can grow and flourish throughout, literally, the rest of your career.

Every kid comes attached to some type of family. It’s worth spending a few extra minutes conducting a full consultation to learn what both child and parent are expecting. No one will regard you higher than a mom who sees you connect with, and show respect to, her pride and joy. Ever-conscious of their own look, moms who go to a different hairdresser are likely to be open to a discussion of the services you can provide for them. Dads are even easier; build in some time to “clean up the nape” for him, and he’ll be putty in your hands. In addition, kids have tons of friends, and word about a nice hair stylist can spread like wildfire around a playground.

But the biggest plus is that children grow. As they become teens and the hair cut appointments expand to include hair color, formal hair, extensions, nails, conditioning services and everything else you offer, they’ll bring you lots of retail and service business. The rest of the reward has nothing to do with money: it’s watching a child’s smile light up with that first realization that she’s beautiful.
