Spotted: Lots of Hair Commentary that Begins, “Spotted”

You already know how fascinated I am by the way a single actress, TV show, movie, rock artist, politician, sports figure or other phenomenon can inspire a sudden trend in hair or fashion. When it happens, of course, I encourage you to sharpen your hair cutting skills so you can deliver whatever that white-hot look dictates.

These days, if you have young women asking for a style that can accommodate a headband, chances are they’ve been watching “Gossip Girl.” The headband buzz seems to be everywhere, so it was no surprise to find this subject line in my email box: “Spotted: Blair Waldorf Passing for a Goody Girl!” Young, gorgeous and privileged, “Gossip’s” main characters Blair and Serena both favor long hair held in place by that venerable accessory, the trusty headband.

How cool! You get to design short, mid-length and long-layered hair cuts that take on a prep-school twist when you add the wide band. You may even consider retailing the accessory at your station. It can be such a win/win. Your client doesn’t have to go into the mall and shop for the headband, plus she gets your professional opinion on which band glams her best. And you win with an easy retail sale and a happy client who appreciates your attention to what’s going on among the Upper East Side style-setters who hail cabs while still in their teens. ’Til next time, xoxo.
