What’s Halloween done for you lately? Think about it: Halloween gives hairdressers the opportunity to go wild with extreme
hair styling looks. If you talk it up six weeks beforehand, clients may let you be the one to spray them with

temporary hair color, do their bride-of-Frankenstein makeup or fashion some celeb look-alike hair. If your clients aren’t game, apply your skills to your own head and turn yourself into anyone from Marilyn Monroe to Amy Winehouse to the classic black cat.
But this may not thrill you. I think there are two kinds of people: those who look forward all year to October 31 and hit every haunted house in the city, and those who could do without the whole costume-and-candy deal. No matter which category you fall into, at least throw on a witch’s hat, put out a dish of candy corn and go with the spooky flow. Dressing up to look scary or funny tells clients that you don’t take yourself too seriously. For the kids, offer to do face-painting or nail glitter. It never hurts to make friends with little girls—today’s mini-Cinderella is tomorrow’s teen client—and you score points with Mom.
Your clients spend enough time worrying; pop a pumpkin-scented candle into a jack-o-lantern and help them have fun for one day! And show off your
hair styling skills in a way they’ve never seen. It’s like entering a hair show’s Fantasy Hair competition without the risk of losing, because on Halloween everyone wins.
