Texas Cosmetology License Requirements

Modern Salon Learning courses are in the process of obtaining course approvals for license renewal by Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). We will be posting courses as they become approved.
Please note TDLR requires a $5 submission fee for reporting of CE credits.
Credit Hours Required:The hours required must be completed within the term of the license being renewed. For example, if a license expires on September 15, 2007, the hours must have been completed between September 15, 2005 and September 15, 2007. The following chart shows the number of hours and type of education required.
Continuing education courses taken must be dedicated in one or more of the following subjects:
• Texas Occupations Code, Chapters 1602 and 1603
• 16 Texas Administrative Code, Chapter 83
• Health and Sanitation Standards in Chapter 83; and/or
• Curriculum subjects listed in 16 Texas Administrative Code, §83.120
Licensees may not receive continuing education credit for attending the same course more than once for one renewal period. Further, licensees must retain a copy of the certificate of completion for a course for two year after the date of completion. In conducting any inspection or investigation of the licensee, the Department may examine the licensee’s records to determine compliance.
Licenses expired before September 1, 2005 may be renewed within 5 years of expiration date by paying the current license fee and a late fee of $53.00 for each license term since expiration. Failure to renew within the 5 year time will result in license cancellation and you will be required to take the written and practical exams to reinstate it.
Licenses expired after September 1, 2005 must renew within 1 year of license expiration date. Failure to renew within the year will result in license cancellation and you will be required to take the written and practical exams to be reinstated.
For a late renewal, the continuing education courses must have been completed within the two year period immediately prior to the date of renewal.
